The Upper Room Experience

May 29, 2009

j0436073The next 10-14 days (May 31-June 14) we will gather in this room to encourage one another as we submit to the Spirit of God in our lives. Please sign in and let us know whom we will be praying with and then let us know, as often as you can, how things are going. Remember we want the Spirit to help, teach and guide us as Jesus said he would (John 14-16). It is okay to post your failings as well as your victories. In your struggles others may want to encourage and the Spirit’s victories in your life will be and encouragement to others.

Thank you for joing us in the Upper Room and letting the Holy Spirit work in your life.  Remember the fruits of the Spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. (Gal. 5:22-23)

Tale of Two Kingdoms

December 3, 2008

Each year I approach the Christmas season with a mission. It hasn’t changed for my entire life. I simply want Christ to be the center and prominent thought of our Christmas celebration. We put up manger scenes, read the Christmas story, attend church and even sing happy birthday to Jesus. Yet, the birth of Christ seems to get swallowed up by all the busyness of the season and the commercialism that surrounds it. Lip service and mind service isn’t enough to fight off the tremendous influence waged upon us by the Kingdom of Consumerism. I must admit at the end of the Christmas season it seems the Kingdom of Consumerism had prevailed against the message of Christ in my life and my family.

I am really excited to enter this year’s Christmas season with a new strategy in hand. One that involves more than a mental assent to what the season is all about. It involves putting into action the Kingdom of Christ by following his example. During this month we will be teaching and participating in two philosophies so simple and yet so life changing. The first is, “Spend Less, To Give More” and second is to “Relationally Touch The Lives of Others.” The first involves spending less on gifts to give more to the needy. I am personally going to try to spend 10% less. The second is to intentionally “touch” the lives of others around us. Neighbors, nursing home residence, consumers we meet, and etc…

I want to put the teaching of Christ into action. If you want to know more listen to the pod cast of the services each week during the month. Pastor Kris set the months challenge up beautifully during the November 30 message.

God bless and feel free to share your ideas and comments.

EFT now at FBC

June 6, 2008

What do we give to God? Our best or what is left? In studying the Scripture I am convinced that God should be first in in our lives. This is evidenced by the way we prioritize our lives. Do we put God first when it comes to our time, talent, testimony or treasure? Or do we only give God our left overs? Cain only gave God “some of” what he had harvested while Able gave his finest. God was pleased with Abel’s offering but disappointed with Cain’s.  The word first means our first, best and finest. This is truly a faith and heart issue for every believer.

Realizing that our society continues to change and many individuals no longer carry or use a checkbook, but pay their bills on line, we have set up a means for individuals to give using direct deposit.  This will enable us to give our first fruit to God. Your financial gift can be given by setting up an electronic transfer on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Several people have already approached us seeking information on how this can be done. If you are interested in being financially faithful to God and feel this will help you please call the church office for more information. Remember God loves the cheerful giver.

It’s Not Easy Being Green FollowUp

April 29, 2008

Each week after the sermons on, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” I have had some interesting conversations. This past week I have had 9 individuals contact me about serving on the Green Committee at church. They range in age from 18 years to mid 60’s. This morning one gentleman told me when he arrived home Sunday his garage looked different. He found several recycling boxes set up.

At the end of the second service I mentioned a handout I put together with 10 first step items on it. Several individuals asked for additional copies. I only made a limited number in an effort to save paper. I mentioned I would post them on the blog. So here they are.

Creation Care First Steps

1. Replace five regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent energy saving bulbs. If every home in America did this, we would save energy equivalent to 21 coal burning power plants.

2. Begin Recycling. You can recycle aluminum cans, newspapers, plastic bags, white paper, colored paper, tin cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles cardboard boxes and magazines. The local recycling station is located at the County Road Commission, 13326 15 Mile Rd

3. Stop unsolicited mail. Eco-cycle claims that in the U.S. each year junk mail requires 80 million trees and uses 28 million gallons of water to produce it — and it costs approximately $450 million to take all of these mailings to a recycling center. At www.eco-cycle.org you will find in-depth information on reducing the amount of junk mail you receive.

4. Carpool or seek alternate forms of transportation. Walk, ride a bike.

5. Reusable Resources Use canvass or cloth shopping bags instead of 6-10 plastic bags. Use durable reusable drinking bottles instead of disposal plastic bottles.

6. Insulate your home. You could save 25% of your energy cost.

7. Use a set-back thermostat for your home.

8. Set your water heater at 120 degrees. Wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old.

9. Wash clothing in warm or cold water.

10. Don’t leave the water running. Turn off the water while brushing teeth, shampooing the dog, shaving, etc,.

AIDS Committee Staying at the Task

April 7, 2008

In the fall of 2006 FBC decided to get involved with the AIDS and poverty crisis. A committee of volunteers organized to educate the church body and help the church and individuals of the church get directly involved in the AIDS pandemic. Since it inception the committee has stayed at the task.

Last fall we began our association with Horizon International. The church body adopted 25 (today 29) orphaned children in Matipane, Limpopo, South Africa. In January of 2008 funds were raised and send to Matipane to build a sewing center and a veggie hut. On April 8th the church will host the Kuyasa Children’s Choir from South Africa at 7 PM… Read the rest of this entry ?

Should Christians concern themselves with the environment? Isn’t the environment a leftist issue? Does the Bible address environmental issues? Does God really care about the environment? This earth is going to be destroyed anyway why should we care about the environment today?

These and many other questions about the environment will be addressed in a two week series by Pastor Gerten on April 20 and 27. Please post your comments and views on this issue prior to the series.

Land Debt Improving

March 26, 2008

In December of 2006, FBC became the owners of the 21 acres that surround the original five acres this ministry was started on in January of 1984. It was truly an answer to prayer. The price tag of $500,000 made my mouth dry every time I thought of going back into debt. It took us almost ten years to pay off the new sanctuary addition we moved into in 1996 ($500,000).

You may recall to make the land purchase we borrowed $400,000 from the bank and $100,000 from our building fund. Today, when I received February’s financial report I couldn’t help but notice the mortgage on the land had dropped to $17,161.10. This has happened by selling five acres to Craig Kempf… Read the rest of this entry ?
